Grain Free Living

Lessons learnt about being grain free

While I have been grain-free alongside my husband for over a decade, I always felt that I sat outside of the typical reasons for being grain free – namely, dealing with auto-immune disease or chronic illness.  As a result of that, and as is fairly evident from the sugar laden recipes on this website, my version of grain free for myself was as long as it technically doesn’t contain a grain, I would eat any processed, refined, manufactured, packaged and sugar laden product and call it food.  I have throughout the years regularly gone on “health kicks” where I removed sugar and dairy from my diet, but inevitably the call of the sugar and carbs would become too strong, and I would fall face first into a plate of grain free pizza dough followed my large amounts of chocolate and ice cream.  Of course, a recipe for disaster, how could it not be?Read More »Lessons learnt about being grain free

7 days of gluten free dinners #2

This week I am making a traditional Lebanese lamb stew, a great grain free spinach pie with a crust made from almond meal and linseeds, and as I’m making a lentil stew, I shared my trick for preparing lentils for less, shall we say “digestive reaction/discomfort”.  It’s actually 6 nights of dinners as one night is always leftover night.

My Top 5 Favourite Grain Free Cracker/Crisp Recipes

I love a good cracker.  They are great with dips or just to munch on generally.  So after going grain free it was great to realise that there are plenty of grain-free options for this handy snack.

Here are my Top 5 cracker recipes, including plenty of nut-free options for those who are allergic to nuts or need to be nut free for other reasons (for example in Australia many schools are nut free due to allergies, so you can’t send your child to school with food containing nuts – a challenge for a grain free family that relies on nuts, but the recipes below show it can be done.)Read More »My Top 5 Favourite Grain Free Cracker/Crisp Recipes

Kale Green Smoothie

Kale is considered a “superfood” and a great addition to any healthy diet.  If you want to read up more detail about kale, try the Worlds Healthiest Foods article here.

Kale is low in calories and high in fibre, iron, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin A, folate and magnesium, among others.  It is full of antioxidants and is a great anti-inflammatory food.  It also has proven cholesterol-lowering benefits.  However, it is important to note that if you have a thyroid condition, you need to be careful about consuming raw kale on a regular basis due to its goitrogenic effect, which can hinder thyroid function.  You can read about Kale and its effect on your thyroid here.  You can read more about Goitrogens in this article from PaleoHacks, which covers the subject well.

I always avoided it because the first time I tried it, “grass” was the first thing that came to mind.  Not at all appealing.  Turns out  I was just preparing it wrong.  While it looks much like silverbeet, it does require a little extra finesse.Read More »Kale Green Smoothie

Grain Free Lebanese Tabouli

Tabouli is a highly nutrient dense salad that originated in the Arab world and usually uses bulgur (also bulghur, burghul or bulgar), which is wheat. My version is grain free and is based on an authentic recipe taught to me by my Lebanese in-laws.

Grain Free Banana & Raspberry Cake

I’ve been making a grain free banana cake for years.  This version is the “new and improved” version and the added raspberries make it something special, but it is still relatively inexpensive to make as it only uses two eggs.  The original recipe this one is based on is here.   This version I think is “healthier” as it uses coconut sugar and coconut oil.Read More »Grain Free Banana & Raspberry Cake
